Choline Intake by Mother May Help Breast Health in Daughters: A research review

When mothers think about nutrition during pregnancy, they focus on immediate benefits for their unborn baby. Supplementation during pregnancy includes probiotics (1), a multivitamin (2), vitamin C (3), vitamin E (4), vitamin B-3 (5), and calcium (6), in addition to decreasing pollution exposure (7).

But research has also shown long-term benefits for supplementation during pregnancy in the form of omega-3 fatty acids to help breast cell health in daughters (8). Now a new study in mice (9) has found that choline, found previously to help with lung health (10), heart health (11), and overall health (12), may also help breast cell health in daughters.

In the study, pregnant mice were fed either choline in amounts of 0, 8, or 36 millimoles per kg of weight per day or placebo until birth. At day 65 of the female offspring’s life, the researchers injected the females with a carcinogen to simulate breast cancer.
